Ummmm, Can WE Talk?
“WE need to do something with your hair.”
WE. as in, the both of us. not the royal “we”, just the “i don’t like your nappy rat trap anymore, you need to do something with it” we.
oh. that one. “we” usually means trouble, sometimes for both parties. like in the previous example. trouble for me because my husband doesn’t like my long hair. trouble for him because he implied that my hair is unattractive. silly man. we know who wins in these situations.
regardless, how many conversations have i had using this “by we i mean you” approach? now that i have a house and even more crap to clean and fix and paint and sweep, WE gets thrown around a lot. WE needed to finish some painting on our first and second floor. WE were glad after nine months it got done. finally. Right now, WE are trying to come up with ideas for ella’s first birthday party. WE need to figure out invitations and a budget. both sound like perfect tony jobs, don’t they? i thought so, too. he has of yet to tackle either.
mostly the WE thing just completely annoys me because i know exactly what he’s doing. pawning something off on me that he doesn’t want to do. but i have my ways.
tony know’s he’s in for a honey-do when i start off a sentence with “ummm–.” he immediately says no and heads the other way. it only took almost ten years of marriage for him to figure out my tactics. now i have to find some other way of tricking him into doing jobs for me.
usually that means i resort to nagging. persistent nagging. painful repetition of requests. my newest one? “ummmmm, could you finish my new masthead? sometime this year?” the masthead is the icky blue space above the blog that says knee deep. WE have this fabulous new one just gathering dust, so to speak, until tony does whatever it is that he does and loads it onto this site. it’s probably time consuming and boring, which is why it hasn’t been done. yet.
so my new trick? no “ummmms”, no nagging. not this time. this time, blogging. public humiliation always does wonders. hopefully, i’ll have a new masthead soon.
WE’ll keep our fingers crossed.
